Facial Acupuncture for Bell’s Palsy

I was so frightened.

I remember looking in the mirror and putting up a hand to feel the right side of my face. It felt odd – not quite numb, but not quite normal either. I couldn’t blink or close my right eye. My smile was lopsided. The entire right side of my face drooped. Try as I might, I couldn’t make the muscles work. It scared the hell out of me. (And it scared my parents even more.) At the age of 10, I had Bell’s Palsy.

Having dealt with this issue personally, I have a special place in my heart for folks suffering with Bell’s Palsy.

Also known as Facial Palsy, Bell’s can occur at any age. The exact cause is isn’t known, but it’s believed to be the result of swelling and inflammation of the nerve that controls the muscles on one side of your face. It may possibly be a reaction that occurs after a viral infection.

For most people, Bell’s Palsy is temporary. Symptoms usually start to improve within a few weeks, with complete recovery in about six months. A small number of people continue to have some Bell’s palsy symptoms for life. Rarely, Bell’s palsy can recur.

According the MayoClinic.com, signs and symptoms of Bell’s palsy come on suddenly and may include:

  • Rapid onset of mild weakness to total paralysis on one side of your face — occurring within hours to days
  • Facial droop and difficulty making facial expressions, such as closing your eye or smiling
  • Drooling
  • Pain around the jaw or in or behind your ear on the affected side
  • Increased sensitivity to sound on the affected side
  • Headache
  • A decrease in your ability to taste
  • Changes in the amount of tears and saliva you produce

Modern biomedical treatment includes pharmaceutical drugs like Prednisone (a corticosteroid) and Valacyclovir (an anti-viral). Prednisone is used to reduce inflammation of the facial nerve. Although anti-viral meds like Valacyclovir haven’t shown any more benefit than placebo, these may be given because of the theory that Bell’s Palsy may be related to a Herpes virus.

Facial Acupuncture is a safe option that has been found effective in the treatment of Bell’s Palsy.

Facial Acupuncture Help for Trigeminal Neuralgia

Trigeminal Neuralgia is a chronic pain condition that affects the trigeminal nerve, which carries sensation from your face to your brain.

If you suffer from Trigeminal Neuralgia, you know exactly how painful it can feel. But, for those who’ve never experienced it, this is what others have to cope with:

The Mayo Clinic says Trigeminal Neuralgia symptoms may include one or more of these patterns:

  • Episodes of severe, shooting or jabbing pain that may feel like an electric shock
  • Spontaneous attacks of pain
  • Attacks triggered by simple daily activities such as touching the face, chewing, speaking or brushing teeth
  • Bouts of pain lasting from a few seconds to several minutes
  • Episodes of several attacks lasting days, weeks, months or longer — some people have periods when they experience no pain
  • Constant aching, burning feeling that may occur before it evolves into the spasm-like pain
  • Pain in areas supplied by the trigeminal nerve, including the cheek, jaw, teeth, gums, lips, or less often the eye and forehead
  • Pain affecting one side of the face at a time, though may rarely affect both sides of the face
  • Pain focused in one spot or spread in a wider pattern
  • Attacks that become more frequent and intense over time

When you’re in that kind of excruciating pain, it’s no wonder that Trigeminal Neuralgia has been called “The Suicide Disease.”

Luckily, Acupuncture has been shown to provide relief. As you can see from the illustration below, one of the major Acupuncture channels on the body, Leg Yangming Stomach Channel, runs in a similar fashion to the Trigeminal Nerve.

Modern biomedical interventions for Trigeminal Neuralgia involve the use of anticonvulsant and antispasmodic drugs, and/or surgery that damages the nerve so that it no longer functions. The drugs often have side effects like dizziness, confusion, drowsiness, and nausea. And of course, surgery can stop the pain, but in trade, your face becomes permanently numb. Frankly, many people who suffer with Trigeminal Neuralgia are so desperate to get out of pain, they’re completely willing to deal with the pharmaceutical and surgical risks.

Complete Whole Body Wellness?

In order to understand marketing messages within the beauty industry, I’ve been looking at some local Med Spa ads. And it’s making my gears grind. There’s a pretty big disconnect happening. And it ain’t pretty. Right now, women may be thinking that what they’re receiving from a Med Spa is complete whole body wellness.

Here’s a direct quote from a Colorado Med Spa’s page:

“Treat yourself to the complete whole body wellness you deserve.”

 

Then they list products and procedures such as:

  • Botoxbrowfiller
  • Dysport
  • Xeomin
  • Juvederm
  • Radiesse
  • Restylane
  • Perlane
  • CO2 DOT Therapy
  • Fraxel
  • FotoFacial
  • Triniti
  • Thermage
  • VASERShape
  • hCG & Diet Counseling

 

I’m sorry. I’m going to go old school Clara Peller here. Where’s the beef!? Er…Complete Whole Body Wellness?

Have I missed it? You know, “Wellness?”

The state of being in good health, especially as an actively pursued goal

I’m not certain how Injectables, Fillers, Lasers, Peels, and Waxes create a state of whole body “good health.” Especially if they contain toxic components.

It’s possible that this Med Spa may consider their “wellness” service to be the hCG Dietary Counseling. But, is getting counseled on how to severely reduce the amount you’re eating (so that you can allow an unnatural amount of injected hormone to burn off your fat) “wellness?”

Do you think by offering these products, they’re insinuating that your outside matters more than your inside? Do you think they may have misunderstood the idea of “Complete Whole Body Wellness?”

On the other hand, Traditional Chinese Medicine is “holistic medicine.”

Medicine characterized by the treatment of the whole person, taking into account mental and social factors, rather than just the physical symptoms of a disease.

Or, you’re cultivating your health from the inside out with Internal Herbal Medicine, Traditional Chinese Dietary Coaching, and Qi Gong exercises. All five branches of Traditional Chinese Medicine contribute to the physical and mental wellbeing that makes up “complete whole body wellness.”

My mission – Helping women retain and foster the glowing softness and feminine radiance that comes innately from health and wellness. Helping women regain that sassy spark that’s rooted in unpretentious self-confidence. Helping women align mind, body, and spirit with their own divine life purpose. To me, that’s true “complete whole body wellness.”

What does it mean to “Be Seen Deeper?”

At Artesian Spring Oriental Medicine, our newest tagline is “Be Seen Deeper.”

But what does that mean?

I shot a short video to answer just that question. Take a look!

 

 

Be seen deeper.

What does that mean?

It means that you’re not seen on a superficial level. It means you’re not judged on your appearance. It means that you’re not seen as nothing but a set of symptoms. It means that what you have to say isn’t discounted. It means that you’re not just another number. It means you don’t have to sit in your underwear in a cold sterile room for 45 minutes just to get 7 minutes of your practitioner’s time.

Be seen deeper.

It means that when you’re seen by me, I see more than you expect. TCM Pulse Diagnosis, Tongue Diagnosis, and Chinese Physiognomy/Face Reading, allow for a deeper insight into your daily life, your diet, your stress level, your emotional state, and your health conditions.

These skills allow me a view into deeper levels of your being. Deeper levels that may be the root cause of your imbalance. These may be things you keep hidden because they’re too painful to bring into the present. These are things kept in the dark because you’d be left vulnerable if they were brought to light. Old injuries. Old emotional wounds. Old traumas.

These are the things, if addressed and processed, which create massive change and positive transformation in your life. But you keep them deep for a reason. So, it takes courage and bravery to be vulnerable and create space for transformation.

It means you have a safe space to step through your fear into those old vulnerable places. It means that you’re not alone. It means that you are supported. It means that you are truly seen, heard, and valued.

To be seen deeper, means holism. It means working with your body, mind, and spirit. It means using all 5 Branches of Chinese Medicine – Acupuncture, Massage Therapy, Herbal Medicine, Dietetics, and Qi Gong Exercise. It means a multi-disciplinary approach. Utilizing other experts when needed – Medical Doctors, Chiropractors, Counselors, and more.

To be seen deeper, means caring deeper. It means I do what’s necessary to get you what you need, but perhaps not necessarily what you want. It means you won’t be patronized, enabled, or coddled. It means you’ll have support to stay disciplined and dedicated to your success. It means transfiguration by tough love.

To be seen deeper, means having a deeper belief in your own self.

You might be asked to step outside of your comfort zone. Through bravery, moving through fear, and journeying into your challenges, you’ll create amazingly deep transformation for yourself. And when you do this, you’ll be stronger. You’ll be healthier. You’ll be happier. You’ll become the person you were meant to be. And others will take notice.

This is what it means to be seen deeper.
